Sitting Bull is done. Now for sale. He was not quite finished when I left class in Savannah.

Friday when I left him. Darkened the background and finished him.

And I added some darks to the flowers and lifted some greens. Straightened the biz of grits. More greens to strawberry tops.

Monday two weeks ago. Hard to believe it’s been that long.

A sketch of some of my class mates. I like to fill my class notes with sketches of people in class so I remember them. I often run into them again in another class. So you never know.

Back to my nap. Zzzzzz xoxoxox Margaret and Zoe who’s napping too.

The sketch. Her hand gave me a terrible time.

This is what she looked like when I left Aiken yesterday.

I didn’t like the way her chin ran into her neck with no contrast to make the chin jut a little so I dumped it into iPhoto and turned it black and white to check the tones. The tone under the chin was the same as the tone on her chin just like I thought.

So I added a dab or cad red light to her face and got rid of her sprig hair and fussed a hands. Added leg shadow foot shadow.

So now there is a dab of contrast between the chin and the neck. Was afraid if I added more I would ruin the paintjng.

Ms Tracy Culbertson the owner of Art in the Mountains who sponsored and ran the Charles Reid workshop in Savannah.

A really fun lady!! She and her assistant Marty kept the workshop organized and moving. Marty and Tracy in our pedicab when we all went to Blick.

They were also in charge of organizing fun after class like the ghost tour.

I actually painted this a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta. Should I say finally. I drew it days before.

The seeds. I actually used masking fluid applied with a toothpick. Not something I am fond of using but couldn’t think how else to keep the white seeds. Not fond of it because it makes a too regular hard edge.

I had wanted the peacock blue background lighter but it didn’t look good so I added splatter in both manganese and ultramarine and double painted the wash on the background.

Do you know how hard it is to run a wash down both sides of a painting at the same time. Just shoot me.🤪 Pencil sketch follows. The ink sketch in my stillman and birn sketchbook. I did think about adding words to the darker one but I think it might be too dark to do that too. Of course I left the it in Atlanta so I can’t write on it anyway til I get back up there for my grandsons birthday in a couple of weeks.

It will be for sale when I bring the berries home.

Colors used pyrrole red quin gold and alizarin on strawberries. Shadows ultramarine and more quin gold and I think purple.

Greens chrome green quin gold and Viridian. Charles Reid greens. Cost me a lot to learn those two colors. 😅

At Atlanta Artist Center yesterday am before I headed home.

Two fifteen minute contour drawings on canson art board.

Drew her several times before I decided on how to place her on the Fabriano cp 140#.

I decided she was too skinny this way. Moved and Redrew her againsecond break. time to head home. It moves fast when u use watercolor. 20 min then a ten min break repeat for a couple of hours.

The fringe is made by scratching the wet paint w the brush handle.

Somehow I lost the line separating her arm and her chest. Hmmm Eyes were off. No idea whats wrong w the color in these.

When I got home I used a Mr clean and masking tape And wiped out her left eye which was off and what’s with the alizarin in the background.

I repainted her left eye, some of the background and a bit of a shadow on her chest. I also outlined her with a 2b.

More splatter.

I quit. Colors used cad red light cad ya light yellow ochre cerulean on skin. Burnt sienna too. Burnt umber and ultramarine hair. Background cerulean and yellow Ochre alizarin in cloth.

What did I learn?! NEVER paint the eyes like regular eyes. Do them like the ones in the painting above.

Generally it’s enough in these sessions to just indicate an eye. Aka the top of the eye and the iris NOT a realistic eye. Charles did it. He always draws a realistic eye.

I never quite finished this one. Second one of the first day of drop wet painting. So many things to remember it’s hard to do.

When I had time to start a second one I couldn’t move because I was hemmed in.

My friend Colette didn’t like the composition. My friend Karen did. Hmm I think it has a lot of nice transparency. Also some good transparency.

This one has too much background and it’s grey because I mixed it on the palette not the paper. A BIG nonononono!!!

Margaret who ran up and downstairs at least 30 times yesterday hauling in my luggage and art supplies. Who needs to exercise?! Xoxoxo 💋

Plein Air?!

Ah no. Way to hot in Savannah for that. Think: walk out the door and start to drip in under five minutes – humid and HOT! 🤪

A pedicab was the perfect way to see the city and inexpensive.

Watched the amazing Charles Reid paint one last time. The days flew by!!! That’s his sweetheart of a wife Judy with him. Only married 57 Years!!!

My not quite finished painting of Sitting Bull an Ogalala Sioux medicine man. We were painting from old copyright free photos because it was way to steamy in Savannah.

I had left my sketches at Karen’s 26 miles away by the time I discovered the fact. So I redrew him and forgot to take a picture of him before I painted. We were all on melt down to try to finish before three when class ended.

Colors used. Burnt sienna cobalt and yellow ochre on his face. Ultramarine blue and burnt umber hair. Clothes. Burnt sienna cobalt yellow cerulean orange cad red and a dab of Alizarin.

Then Tracy Marty and i went to blicks and did some crack drawing. A good way to get drippy. Must have been over 100 even in the shade. What were we thinking?!! But it was fun.

The Art In the Mountain ladies who ran the workshop Tracy and Marty had looked at my crack sketchbook while the rest of us were painting and wanted to learn how to do it. Can’t way to see theirs painted. They are both too much fun.

Then we went down on river st by the Savannah and finally went in the air. I think I was trying for a heat stroke.

Back to the hotel for the Ghost Tour. How much can you do in one day?! 😱 Riding the open trolley til 10:30 listening to ghost stories. Is Savannah the second most haunted city. I think my brain was dead by then.

The city looks totally different at night. I could get lost wandering around all those twenty something squares in Savannah.

Our hostess did her best to scare us to death. A great informative tour. suppose to see specters in this pier mirror in the Sorrell Weed Museum house.

Scary?! Not so much as the Key West ghost hunting tour I went on. No ghost sightings but I don’t really want to EVER see one.
