Day 1682 The Chuck and Judy Show

According to Judy Reid who keeps Charles Reid organized and the class too. Judy also arranged the flowers, assigns seats, sells paintings coordinates book signings and buys Charles a new baseball cap without which I think he could not paint.

“We like to think Charles is channeling Sargent. Sargent whistled when he worked too. “

The kindergarten teacher may have retired but she still is herding her class. A funny lovely lady Judy tells a good version of the Chuck and Judy show as she bills them which has been going on since 1961 when they met at U of Vermont. Behind every great painter is a well organized woman if they are lucky enough.

Here’s the Charles Reid story according to Judy with a few amendments from Charles.

BYTW Charles does not like to exercise. His brother the doctor did and is long gone. Charles is 81 and going strong.

And according to Charles these are the main student problems.

The evening of the next to the last day of class Colette, Mike and I sat on the rooftop of the Homewood suites and made a list of our favorite Charles Reidisms. Here they are

Looks a little plain compared to the other pages. Guess I will have to paint it too.

Been working on a new painting most of the day. Did I say Tahred. On melt down trying to get an entry together for the SC Watermedia National Show. Entries due next Friday. 🙀

I even bought an interesting shaped bottle of olive oil today. Calling this painting Ratatouille because of the veggies in it. Just couldn’t do another eggplant aka Barney painting.

Did five sketches of geese at Browns Feed and Seed. I wandered across them when I was looking for there chickens that are usually at Browns. just as much fun to draw geese as chickens and they don’t run around as much. Two are still in the car. Not the geese. Sketches!! 😂

My New Holbein Palette!!

Paintings done with Charles Reid colors. New Palette. The other one was getting old and rusty with enamel popping off.

Lamy pen Noodler Eelskin ink and Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

Day 1681 The Rooftop Views

Savannah Rooftop View
Savannah from the Hotel Rooftop

I drew this the night we hung out at the bar restaurant on top of the Homewood Suites. Dummy me forgot to take a picture of the scene so I improvised colors.

The grey building on the left is actually the Pirates House one of the oldest buildings in Savannah. Men used to be shanghaied from the place and impressed into service on the ships at the nearby harbor. The restaurant will give you a tour of the tunnels under it where the kidnappers took the men to the ships.

Colors used Charles Reid palette. Stillman and Birn sketchbook Lamy Ef Noodler Eelskin Ink.

Day 1680 Mercer House

Mercer House on Monterey Square Savannah

On Monterey Square.

One day when I was in Savannah I got up at the crack of dawn to go draw old town Savannah.

Forsyth Park

I really wanted to draw the big fountain in Forsyth Park but it would have used all my time up to walk to it and draw so I drove over to Monterey Square to draw the Mercer House. I actually ended up drawing all four corners of the square. Aka more houses to come.

The family home of Johnny Mercer of Moon River song fame and where a infamous murder took place back in the late eighties. The murder was made famous by the Book and the movie starring Kevin Spacey Midnite in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Due to the murder and two other deaths it’s one of the most haunted homes in Savannah. A young boy actually fell from the roof and died when he was impaled on the wrought iron fence. Terrible story isn’t it?!!

Painted with watercolor pencils and my whiskey painter palette. And a white univalve gel pen.

Ps I had fun splattering the greenery and the resurrection that swathes the old live oaks branches by tapping on my size ten davinci brush Not the Ferrel.

Margaret off to see Mama Mia. Xoxox

Day 1679 Mike and Allan

One of the things I like to do at a class is to interperse my class notes with drawings of my classmates so I can remember them.

You would be surprised how many times the same people show up in classes. One advantages is they are paying attention and hold quite still so are fairly easy to draw.

Mike is one my friends that I go to Alot of classes with. This is our third time with Charles and our fifth class together. We are already plotting another Charles class and a trip to art in the Carolinas. We have also take Ted Nuttall and Fealing Lin together since we met at Cheap Joes three Charles Reid classes ago.

Mike Gantt at Ted Nuttalls class

Mike Gantt still at Ted Nuttalls class

I think Mike has been in every sketchbook I did during class aka my class notes. Usually I draw her with our friend Karen is there but Karen’s moving house so she didn’t take the class with us this time. 😏

Mike Gantt and Karen Schaff

This time Mike is with her fabulous photographer husband Allan Clark. Check him out on Facebook. He’s a sweetheart who schleps us around to dinner on our road trips.

Look for more appearances of Karen. We are going on a 19 day transatlantic cruise next year so I am sure I will be drawing her again.

Mike and I drew each other across breakfast at the Boone Cracker Barrel

Colors used: Charles Reid colors of course. Lamy EF with Noodler eelskin ink in my stillman and birn.

That’s it for tonite. We waded thru Anna Karenina at book club tonite. Margaret about ready for bed. Xoxoxox

Day 1678 Henry time

When I was in the mountains recently my grandson and I drew down on the rocks by the river.

Here’s what he drew. He lives drawing cars and trucks.

I also let my three year old granddaughter draw in my sketchbook. She was thrilled. These are her monster houses and they need flowers. All I can say is go figure.

Maybe less is more. A quick cardinal I drew this morning while he was eating on the back deck. He may or may not be finished. Maybe he wants a wing?!!

Margaret off to French in a bit. Au revoir. Xoxoxox

Got this from WordPress yesterday. Odd but I will take it. Wonder if that’s when I started why they bill me every January?! Strange strange. I know it was the Russians. 😂🤣

Day 1675 – Matthew!!!

Matthew 16×22” Fluid cp 140# WIP

Monday at life modeling I heard he was coming to the Atlanta Artist Center for portrait painting on Tuesday and that he was fantastic so I decided to stay on in Hot Lanna one more day.

Loved him. He never moved!! The man is granite!!!

Hmm I think that mustache needs to go. Too dark. It’s done with ultramarine blue. Oopsey. What happens when u don’t stand back enough.

The sketch. I was toying with putting the chair in.

25 minutes.

Still needs his cushion.

What a hideous mustache effect. Eeekk. Maybe a bit more shadow on his left arm. And that pillow. Crop it 83 hmm shadow on the left side and bottom. And somewhere I lost his left nostril. Hmm that’s easy to fix. And a bit more curve to his lower left cheek.

Have lightened it a bit. Will work on it some more tomorrow. Shoot me someone.

Drawn on 140 lb cp Flyid paper. The one with a Charles Reid painting as the cover photo. Drawn with a .7mm 2B lead pencil.

Day 1296 Magic Time Finally

This post was stuck in my scheduled posts box. I don’t know if I posted but it’s such a great post can’t hurt posting again.

Watching Charles Reid paint a person is like watching someone make magic. He twitches his brush here and here. Stating at the nose suddenly there’s a fabulous painting of a person.

John was our model today. He did a wonderful job.

Charles painting.

The Master Charles Reid the most talented watercolorist in America today.

My sketch.

Painting

More painting.

Charles said time to quit so I did and I started another of John. Let ok’ing at him he needs more shadow on his cheek to define his cheek bone. Maybe a highlight lifted also on the cheek and more shadow in his brow.

John and his Jack Russell Jedi.

We all adored Jedi

Especially me. Missing my Zoe. One more of Jedi and his dad John.

My second drawing. I had about forty five minutes left to paint him.

Progress.

Times up. Hmm think he needs more hair but I like this one best of the two paintings.

Up to the rooftop the rain had ended.

A tugboat heading up river.

Night on the river

A paddle boat passing by while I waited for my car.Look who decided to jump in bed with me tonite. My friend Karen’s collie Carly. What a sweetheart.

Tomorrows model Carver whose mom looks like Madonna.

Nite nite. Margaret xoxoxo

Day 1675 A few more gestures

15 minutes each. This one is on Canson waterboard.

Here she is cleaned up. Mucho better. See below for the list of her sins.

You can actually erase the paint off the canson board.

Maybe I should clean up a few of those pencil marks. Might improve her greatly. And my friend Ruth said get rid of the blob below her foot so I did and a few others.

And lighten the stool up. Gave her an eye. Vague but there. Cleaned up her profile.

OH these are drawn with a Staedler 2B pencil. Very easy to erase.

This one is my favorite. Also 15 minutes in my Dr Sketchys sketchbook a 11×14″ superaquabee that loves watercolor.

My friends think I should possibly paint the table and then leave it as she stands. I think she has an elegance to her. Quick Alla prime painting.

Somehow I think this backporch squirrel gesture sketch fits right in. To color him or not!? I like him like he is.

I tried to post yesterday. It’s still stuck in my drafts. No idea why. I thought it has published. I will think about it tomorrow.

Problem solved. Evidently WordPress locked me out because someone had compromised the servers. New password and I can upload again.

Those Russians have been at it again.

Hugs Margaret xoxoxox tired. And ready for a nap. Hmm it’s too late. Well maybe early bedtime?!!!
