Day 2011 Columbia Museum of Art and Jackson Pollock

10×25 foot mural 1943 Oil and house paint.

I don’t know if you have ever seen the Jackson Pollock movie with Ed Harris as Pollock but it’s a must see. I have always loved Jackson Pollock. I love to splatter and drip. To see this HUGE mural yesterday was totally unexpected a BIG thrill. Sooo well worth the $8 I spent on admission. WHe made the yellow pink and red drips by thinning the artist oil paint and slinging it across the surface. The white was probably the last layer added. It is casein house paint not oil paint. He worked on this over the summer of 1943. Oil takes a few days to dry. The thicker it is the longer it takes to dry. Just think lucky Peggy Guggenheim got to live with this everyday in her NYC apartment. Did I say I am jealous of Peggy?! The completion date.

The piece de resistance his signature. 😳😳😳😳 A couple of Diebenkorn lithographs too!! Thrill thrill. I love Diebenkorn. The second one is from his Ocean Park series. NOT my favorite of his wonderful opus BUT hey it’s a Diebenkorn. I will take it. Diebenkorn often used house paint too. San Francisco Abatract Expressionist. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

A gorgeous Robert Henri who just incidentally taught anybody who was somebody in early 1900s American painting.

Fairfield Porter Charles Reid’s hero who is my hero. Does that mean Fairfield is my grand hero?! Looks a lot like Charles flower oil paintings.

Loved These two but forgot to take a pic with their names. The great Claude Monet. Looks like out my window on foggy mornings.

Wonder if they would let me borrow this angel about three feet. These could fit into my eclectic house. and this was just odd.

They had a whole HUGE wall full of colorful Mao Zedong Andy Warhol heads. Why didn’t I take a pic of those?!

If you Can make It To The Columbia Art Museum hurry up and go. You will be glad you did.

Margaret off to bed. Xoxoxoxo

Day 2010 Its Saturday

Not done but greatly improved Half sheet fluid hot press 140#. Requires more work especially her hair. Not dark enough.

The too big head hideous hand

Trying to draw Andrea is always difficult because she wiggles and twitches only still for short periods. When she wiggles she never quite resets so you area always chasing the hand or the arm or the leg.

Smaller head but that hand🤮

Today to compound problems she kept falling asleep so even the angles of the head would change. Her while body would go slack changing position.

Maybe I can paint her now

A new twist. Eeek. Remind me NO Saturday drawing when Andrea is the model.

Or use cheap paper. The kind you don’t mind throwing on the rubbage heap.

Only 25 min to paint a half sheet sketch 😳😵😵😵

A lot I like about it now But she still Needs more Work.

Go round two. Half sheet. Cropping the body. Still not down either. Groan. Compost pile

Is growing.

That hand is a killer.

At least the paper dried flat as a flitter. Thankful for small

Miracles. The rest of the pack.

Coach. He actually did three.

Katie Padgett. Terrible photo. Katie is going to be modeling at the art students league in MYC in May. How exciting is that?!

Dr Fred is back making cappuccinos. Fun painting.

Day 2009 Fabulous Friday

And who doesn’t need a drink to top off the week or start the weekend?!

Currently I am in love with a rusty nail first fixed for me by Alan my friend Mikes husband. I am a big fan of liquor on the rocks or straight out of the bottle as long as it’s great liquor.

This one is made with Johnny Walker. The Black label is $60 at the discount liquor store. 😳

Ps I did think is people can draw their morning tea cups I can draw my favorite evening drink and it was fun to add the recipe plus a few factoids.

First go round. Didn’t like the lay out

I always thought it was whiskey. NOPE it’s scotch. And Drambouie is scotch liqueur. No doubt $50 a bottle.

I drew it with the pentel brush pen a Lamy joy with a calligraphy nib, a Lamy Safari, and a Lamy Vista. I bought them all on amazon for $25 or less.

Can you tell which one did which writing/ drawing?!

Superaquabee tablet and watercolor pencils

Day 2008 Foreshortened

Shoot me.

Our model Jessica was sitting on top of a stool on top of a table.

Half sheet hot press fluid 140#

What a challenge. You have to leave it to Professor Joe to cook up some oh so challenging hard to draw poses.

Too big head!

Made for weird proportions. I spent more time drawing and revising -1 hr 20 min – than I did painting. Her legs were still too heavy at second break. The head was better but still a little big. Draw draw draw. Eeekkk! Jessica is really not a very big girl. Maybe 5’1 110 lb at the most.

Did I say I hated reed raring the head. Once you get a likeness you hate to oops erase it.

The way I left Jessie yesterday. The peanut gallery said she needed a stool so she got one today. I darkened a few of the lighter areas and especially her left arm which was back in shadow. With no photo reference it wasn’t easy.

the Head was so small I really didn’t want to do many details. Colors used burnt sienna burnt umber ultramarine cerulean cobalt. And that’s it.

My friend Drew Murphys 2×3′ acrylic

A few other watercolors of Jessie. One Saturday life modeling. The rest are a session at Dr Sketchys .

Margaret out running errands.

Day 2007 The tale of the Nemesis

Zoe is on the job the minute my neighbors pointer comes outside barking. She doesn’t even like to see Roxy in the her front yard Because Roxy charges thru the bushes line at Zoe as she peacefully does her business barking incessantly.

Bytw I know you all think a Jack Russell is a crazy barker but Zoe never barked til months after I got her. Now she barks at Roxy l. She’s taken over Honeys job of guarding the house and the yard and her mom.

All these things add up to Roxy being Zoe’s nemesis.

Margaret off to get her hair done. Xoxoxox. Maybe a spot of urban sketching downtown on this very chilly day. 29 last nite brrrrr.

Day 2006 Plein air sketching

The Canadian geese nesting on the old rice paddy down the street. About six of them live here guarding their eggs on the island in the middle of the paddy. Waiting for rhe geese to dry. I painted too much yellow ochre across their breast and had to daub it off with paper towel. Not the best sketch of the geese. I am blaming it on Zoe pulling on the leash. She finally wrapped me in the cord. Pentel brush pen on 300# Kilimanjaro cold press

Here’s one of them.

I watched this YouTube while I was having my morning cuppa. He draws with pentel throw away brush pens. Maybe if I practice more I will draw like he does one day.

Margaret Xoxoxoxo off to Aiken to life model. Xoxoxox

Day 2005 Birds are

Flocking to the feeders.

I decided to challenge myself and use the water brush on the watercolor pencil.

It worked MUCH better this way than it did with the pan Watercolors.

You really can get a lot of juicy color out of the watercolor pencils when you wet them. These are

Faber castell durer, derwent, and inktense watercolor pencils

Margaret off for a walk on this cold day. Bad me ordered a Lamy not on amazon. I hear they are divine. We shall see.

I am loving my Lamy al-Star F for quite a while now. Draws and writes so smoothly.

Day 2004 – Moh Dr Sketchys

A hula hooping kitty cat skit. Two kitties w two hoops. Lotsa fun. A hard pose to hold for 20 minutes.

Margaret going for a walk at least in her mind. It’s pouring rain. Shoulda gone earlier. Oops xoxoxo

Day 2003 foreshortening 😵😵😵

How she looks. Is. Has played. Ed to work on it more til I got the big drip.

First forty min. TOOOO small. Didn’t fill the half sheet up.

I spent the day getting red orange all over everything when I opened the palette to see if I needed more paint. I didn’t but that red orange lept out. Allover my top my purse my shoe. Dropped thru a hole in the shoe onto my foot. Even on one of the kitchen chairs.

Second forty min. Did I say I started over?!

And to make Matters perfect after struggling over the foreshortened drawing for the first two sessions I finally had it right only to get an red orange blob in her black hair. Then I got a hideous drip. The wrong way when I turned the painting to fix her hair.

Groan. Maybe I will finish her maybe NOT. Leaning toward the NOT.
