Day 1250 Waiting

Is the title of this painting of my daughter in law. She was waiting for the server at Sun in My Belly. She was also pregnant. And I was waiting for my sick lab keeping an eye on her while painting it.

This is painted on 300# Fabriano hot press. Not quite done but getting there. I was trying to keep the colors transparent. Hot press paper seems to suck up the color when you touch it but gives a lovely glow if you keep it transparent.

The sketch w a soft lead pencil.

First layers. Loving the hair. Quin gold burnt umber and sienna manganese and cerulean.

Flowers were tough. It was as if every read was the same. And not very transparent. Eeekk. Cad red was not getting it down but vermilion helped. As did some quin reds. The leaves are Charles Reid greens viridian and an opaque sagey green with shots of quin gold and French ultramarine blue.

More Darks on her face and neck. Lots of manganese blue and cad red light. A bit of hookers green. Bits of serpentine green and burnt sienna. All the colors were kept very watery and transparent. Allowed to blend on the surface.

Darker skin tones using the same colors. First layers on the bucket. Blues manganese and cerulean alizarin all very watery. Probably mineral violet.

More of the same colors on the bucket burnt sienna mineral violet cerulean on the paper table cover. Same colors were used to paint the sugar salt and jar on left softening the edges as I go.

So what’s left to do? Darken the background wall. Work on her face. She still looks a little out of focus. And soften the edge on her hair.

Stay tuned for the finish!! Hugs Margaret whose madly knitting when she’s not painting. Xoxoxo

Day 1248 More Charlotte sketches.

Kathy was a great artist who had flown in for Cincinnati for Kim Johnson’s class. She was also very sweet. Love my chicken painting she gave me. And Sherry was just a whole lot of fun though I didn’t know it when I drew this sketch.

I catch a lot of people in profile in classes. Now and then I get a full face like Don a great painter from Myrtle Beach I think. Maybe a touch too much grey on Don.

Back to watching Jamestown on PBS Roku ap. Done by the Downton Abbey people. Great show. Witchcraft in Jamestown. WHO knew?!!

Margaret itching from cleaning pollen off the back porch. And yes I vacuumed it.

Xoxoxo

Day 1247 Jake- Picking away now!

The deadline for the SC show is April 27!! No time to dwaddle. I thought Jake as I am calling him was done til I noticed I had lost several lights. So back to my handy dandy masking tape and mr clean wipe out erasers. I did say I cut them up into wedges didn’t I?! Get 8 or so out of one eraser. Cheap Joes also sells them already cut up. Both work.

When you lift highlights a lot of times you have to soften the edges giving opportunities to loose the white. Then it’s time to lift again. Eeekkk

I also added some darks to his hair on the left of the neck and ear. Combos of burnt sienna and manganese. A few were burnt umber. Quite like those. Two tones wispy bits of u could only see Jake in person.

And I started another one called Waiting. On hot press Fabriano. Definitely abs exciting experience since you can NOT lift off this one. Aka NO Mr Clean will work on it. NIGHTMARE time.

First washes on her face. It looks like I actually know how to paint.

A few leaves added and painted a bit on the bucket. They don’t make me so nervous as the face. Aka harder to mess them up. Hang on I bet I can. I will say the hot press is just lovely paper somehow so rich.

Ok the flowers are knocking me off my feet and looks awful. PRAY for me. Where I stopped.

Flowers are such a pain to paint. I better go watch some Wei Taillendier flower painting YouTube’s. She paints great flowers. I did manage to blot a lot of the red off with clean water and a Kleenex. Hurrah. Somebody send me a red camellia and a few carnations so I can see what I am painting.

Painted some more in my sketchbook from Kim Johnson’s class to warm up at SEVEN AM this morning.

No wonder I am now tired 12 hours later.

And that’s enough for today don’t you think!?

Good nite. Off for a walk. Margaret. xoxox

Day 1247 getting done

Quit about six after painting for hours. Not done yet but getting there. Still have to paint his hair and the right side of the background. And darken the left background. Or I am worried his face is to dark. Sigh.

Love his arms. I do have more paper and so can do him again. We shall see.

I used the palette from Kim Johnson’s class. Colors used quin gold quin sienna cerulean cobalt ultramarine alizarin burnt umber burnt sienna serpentine green cad red light. Think that’s all.

Oh I kept painting over my lights. I learned this trick in John Salimens class.

Tape off the area you want to lift with masking tape. Be sure it’s stuck down well. Using a wedge of wet Mr Clean eraser wipe it over the exposed watercolor. Then dab it with a Kleenex. It will take it back almost to white.

A tip worth every penny I paid for Johns class.

Margaret xoxoxox worrying if the face is too dark.

Day 1246 Trying to warm up

Painting old sketches from Kim Johnson’s class before I tackle this monster.

Half sheet cold press. 15×22″ Hope to enter him somewhere.

Love the way Karen Turned out. Lots of Juicy color. And it was a good sketch. In love with her curly hair too.

Wonky drawings are hard to fix but I tired. I had her eyes off one was higher than the other one.

And this sketch of Kim was just trash. But hey it’s a warm up right?! Scribbles on both of them with grease pencils which are a lot of fun.

Decided the big brown drip between the spray bottle and water bucket had to go. Too distracting.

Colors used Quin gold burnt sienna burnt umber ultramarine blue cerulean serpentine green a yellow cad red light purple. Can’t remember which purple. Oops.

Layer 1. 🤢Always makes me nervous.

Sketches in my stillman and birn which I used for my class notes. I take a lot of notes in the back few pages of my sketch books.

Layer 2. Requires deep breathes. Guess it’s time to paint the big guy. A random guy I took a pic of last fall in Brevard. Sketched with a soft mechanical pencil.

Day 1245 Honey time

Honey and I have been having a distressing time. Surgery for a huge licknoma. Now she’s got an enormous infected lymph node third course of antibiotics in six weeks.

Hoping the cipro will knock it out but who knows at this point?! Of course it’s probably not cancer a big plus in our lives. When your voracious flabrador wont eat you do worry and rush her to the vet AGAIN! Especially when you find a knot on her tummy bigger than your fist.

Hopefully she’s on the mend. Now I am going to turn this into a bigger watercolor. Half sheet I think.

The original photo. For once I drew her from a photo. I love the rug in this pic and the light on it. Got to do better retaining my lights on the rug and Honey. Oopsey. Small size pages so easy to loose hem.

Ultramarine and burnt umber for the blacks. Quin gold on rig and floor. Rug – alizarin marine blue cobalt French ultramarine quin gold. Shadows cobalt ultramarine blue. Eyes and floor quin burnt orange. Serpentine green background.

I used a white gel pen because I killed some of my highlights especially the white around her eye. Oops.

Margaret xoxoxox in Augusta minus a jillion avid Masters golf fans. They have gone home. HURRAH!!!

Day 1244 More GWS and Katherine Conover

The judge and the teacher. Most of these state and national shows have a class that members can take. This time Kathryn Conover was teaching and have a great demo yesterday of using her gesso juice to save bad watercolors we all have.

Her talk was both entertaining and loaded with info.

Her mantra was never throw out a painting no platter how bad. Wet Layer two

Slather it with gesso juice and reuse the paper. Dry Layer Three toned with some quin gold green gold and some watercolor stick scribbles.

Before I added soft lead scribbles which. I smeared with my finger.

Gesso juice is 1/2 acrylic gesso, 1/4 gel medium and 1/4 water. Mix gesso and gel then add water till it’s a whip cream consistency.

Slather on the gesso juice and stir up the old watercolor. Let it dry.

Slather on more gesso juice. And scrape it with that famous art tool a cut up credit card making marks that you let dry into gesso juice.

Loretta Addison Travelers Rest

She also adds stencils and stamps with wine corks when it’s dry using watercolor. It’s a push pull technique.

Davis Jones – Pemaquid Light

Kathleen said this technique turned 140# watercolor paper into 300# and gVe a great wipeable painting surface.

Rebecca Latham- Bobcat Curiosity

For more google Chaos and Order on YouTube. GWS -Georgia watercolor Society- will be posting a video of her talk soon.

To transfer her sketch she uses graphite on the back and traces it with a pen. She also uses white teachers chalk to mark off her sketch.

Alexis Levine -Making Connections

PS my sketch is all watercolor pencil and ink in my stillman and birn.

Bambi Rogers – Last Calf

Margaret who hasn’t done much today besides unpack. Xoxoxox

Larry Hughes – Kiva Oak Tree House

Day 1241 The National Georgia Watercolor Show

Which means you get a whole point instead of half a point toward your GWS signature. A big deal. It takes six regular shows at half a point each or three national shows at one point each. Or a combo of the two.

John Salminen First Place an amazing teacher with more than 275 National and international awards. I have taken his abstract class and highly recommend him. His cityscape class is at the top of my want to take class list.

Another of the top prize winners. There were fifteen of them!

The show at Oglethorpe University Art Museum in Atlanta was amazing. The university is very cool. Gothic arches everywhere modeled on Corpus Christi in Oxford where the founder and First governor or Georgia went to college James Oglethorpe the colleges namesake.

My friend Karen got seventh for this marvelous tiny painting. And a load of loot!! She also got her GWS signature. On to the big time Miss Karen!

Not an award winner but I loved it so now u can too.

Lance Hunter Toxic Beauty Fosh Tails. Second prize. Is it not wonderful?! What an imagination. What a show. The work was astounding. It was like being surrounded by jewels.

A painter from Athens. Acting President. And can’t read he title. Sorry. Ninth or so?! Gorgeous skin. Loved the spray of gold in the corner. And the angle of the painting.

A California painter. John Bucklin. Lagunitas Creek.

Literally painters from every state.

And Karen and I were softies for any dog painting. Dwinda Creek Maggie’s Nap.

Another great dog painting. Even better terriers. Can’t read the name. Sorry.

Margaret off home. My own bed tonite. Xoxoxox

Day 1242 Something different

Using acrylics as watercolor. First a layer of gel medium and crinkled tissue paper was laid down. Then you paint over it with thinned acrylic giving a watercolor effect. Here are a few more done the same way.

I did these four five years ago at a class with Ken Umbach at John Campbell folk school. Nightime in the Blue Ridge. Blue Ridge

These are actually all considered mixed media because of the tissue paper.

Springtime

Actually this is a lot of fun. Just use any tissue paper -these are done with white tissue from the dollar store. Crumple it up. Cover the canvas with gel medium-liquitex or golden or Dick blick. Spread the crumpled tissue paper out over the canvas. Glue it down with more get medium and have fun painting.

Margaret back from the freezing cold Blue Ridge. Xoxoxox
