Woodpeckers

You can hear the pilleated woodpeckers hammering away when u go out in our yard. And we do have all of these woodpeckers in our yard too. I almost got a pic of a pilleated today but he was too fast for me. Watercolor ink neocolor ii oil pastels. In other words i used all my toys!
However I did get some great osprey pics on out boat ride this evening. They are nesting on the railroad trestle at the end of our neighborhood.
The osprey did not like the boat bear their nest. You could hear them shrieking til we drove off.
There were three nests on the trestle but only seems to be one active now.
All in all a nice river ride. More tomorrow. Margaret xoxoxox

Palm tree time

Busy day today. Lost the tall trunk of the palmetto tree darn it. Does that mean a do over?! Always interesting to draw or paint a palm. And a challenge.
The culprits and my antique strathmore 500 mixed media journal. Such lovely paper. only four spreads left in it now.
First go round. Sprinkling water on the neocolor ii Always loose the detail when u wet them. 🧐🧐😵 and I lost more details when I smeared it with a kleenex.
Redrawing details. So u add more color. Always fun to use the Neocolor in spots of water. you never know how it will turn out.
Then added white and pale cad yellow
Getting there. Turned the trunk silver. They are NOT brown. 😵‍💫 Added some black and ultramarine to shadow areas to give the greens more definition.
And done. Well til I decide to mess with it some more.
I didnt use these. Hmmm
Or these. If they were good enough for Picasso for whom they were invented good enough for me.
Don’t want to stop the tips on these up. Maybe another palm using these?! Winsor Newton watercolor markers.
Inktense blocks. Aways fun but not archival.
Prismacolor art sticks. A BIG fav of mine. Good for scribbling.
And then there is this pile. Not opened yet. The british unison landscape colors are just lovely and soft. Prismacolor pastels a little harder more like conte crayons. And opps another smaller pack of prismacolor artsticks.
The cats know how to end this day. Margaret. Xoxoxox

Sandi Hester and some birds

I ran across Sandi, a terribly charming Nashville TN artist, when I subscribed to her substack An Artists life a few weeks ago. I am kind of hooked on her entertaining youtube feed. She talks about everything from art supplies to art books and how to lake the most art possible. I could spend entirely too much money with her helpful tips. Oops. Been trying to swear off art supply buying.

Having fun playing in my big 8×10” Stillman and Birn alpha. Watched a youtube by Sandi Hester who said leave everything set up so all you have to do is sit down and draw something. So I did. Something i had been meaning to do anyway. She suggested drawing birds from a book but i have so many pics on my phone I don’t need to. Somehow I discovered that they are NOT Canadian Geese but actually Canada Geese. Too late. I had already written the name. Sigh.
Anyway this is done with all that leftover watercolor from pouring and Caran dache neocolor II. Oh and Moltow paint markers. A true mixed media bird.

Was just thinking of the diff in these two birds and WHY did i like the heron best? I drew the goose with caran dache and sprayed it to wet the color. I used the watercolor in the background with a big Chinese brush wet on wet with cobalt and indigo. Smack smack and it was done.

The egret was painted first with the cad yellow light indigo and raw sienna. The water is cobalt. I let the bird dry and then drew on it with the neocolor ii. Too much fun. The grass is neocolor ii and prismacolor art sticks. The water. I got the tipples by folding a kleenex w a knife edge dragging it croswise in the paint. It lifts it and leaves a wave. Hmm or is it a reflection?!!🧐🧐🧐

And i drew a Great Blue Heron who hangs out on our river bank eating I have no idea what. This is also done with that same endless watercolor, neocolor ii and prismacolor art sticks. And yes hes my fav. I did use my artistic license and shorten its neck so it would fit on the page. Hmm maybe I will do this one again on watercolor paper and slap her in a frame.

Time to draw

Still not done but it was fun to hang out w friends and paint Azelia who is just lovely and so much fun. Half sheet-15×22” of cold press 140 fluid paper. While I am not fond of a reclining pose had a lot of fun painting the fabric. Used wc paint w very little water to make it opaque. Easy to paint it with the sharp tipped seconds perla brushes.
Gesture drawing warm ups. These are two not minutes.
Not sure how long ruse were. Five minutes ish. She posed til she got tired of the pose.
Five minutes. All done on large sheets of newsprint w Caran d’arche Neocolor ii crayons.
What’s for dinner tonite. Meant to cook it yesterday. Oh well. Chicken pot pie. yummm. Plenty left for tomorrow

Somewhere in Italy

So far 15×20” hahnamuhle rough 140#

On the whole I like it but feel it’s a little light. I will sleep on it and decide. Paint along with Vladislav Yesileyev

The photo
The sketch
Even before painting I managed to smear the worst color of all to remove- Alizarin- on my lovely pristine white paper.
Eeek.
I did blot it off a little. By the end it seemingly became much less noticeable. Thank goodness.
First wash. Boy that took forever. While it looks dark right now it really dried to become very light. cobalt alizarin yellow ochre and cad orange
Sky wash done. I managed to keep my fingers out of for once. Cerulean neutral tint dioxzine violet
Adding shadows. Cobalt yellow ochre dioxzine and neutral tint
Suddenly those darks make the first washed look so light. How strange is that?! The blooms aka rocks on the foreground are made by splattering water on the greys once it dries a bit.
And done for now. You can only see a bit of the alizarin smears. Handy the lady has an alizarin top isn’t it!?

Margaret all in for tonite. Michael’s tomorrow for some fixative I hope. Otherwise waiting til I go to Blick this weekend.

Mark Making!!

Bluebells 2
20×22” Arches cold press 300#

May be a wip aka a work in progress.

First layer watercolor. Lots of yellow and green ultramarine. Slinging paint with the sword brush. What fun.

Makes a lot of Texture

Adding some darks. More paint slinging.

Waiting for some purple and blue pastels to show up from Amazon because I really didn’t have the any good purples or blues.

And I made quite a mess. Paint all over the floor and the tv screen. Oh and me. But still loved doing it.
Done for now. What do u think?! Margaret xoxoxox who should be slinging more paint.

Don Andrews AWS

I took an online zoom class with Don Andrews The Figure in the Lnadscape. I have watched all his available YouTube’s and he was on my bucket list. It cost $35 so I was in. One thing I love about the epidemic is the fact you can stay home and take a class for $35. Normally a class with Don would run $600 for a week.

At the end of class. My figure where is it?! We used a limited palette. Six colors. And i put out his whole list of colors whine whine. I think we only used gamboge, opera pink, cerulean, raw sienna, alizarin, turquoise.

The drawing. Did I say I did not get the 911 to draw it so mine is not right. Too many similar sized rocks.

First wash on a quarter sheet. No that’s not yellow but gamboge which is like a school bus yellow. Yes there’s a drawing under there. A lot of fast and furious painting with a big 1 1/2″ brush. If I had used the half sheet like I was suppose to I would have used a 2″ or even a wider hake brush. Have one of those 3-4″ wide.

As Vlad Yesileyev I think said recently use the biggest brush you can to do the job. And I have always used a big brush. Probably should have used my size 14 sable which I am familiar with not a flat. A better chance of success.

Layering in the midtones. Trying not to wipe out the whites or the midtones. Quite a challenge when you are using a large flat wash brush.

Then the darks which are the same colors just thicker. A cream consistency. I think we did add in a blue. Ultramarine or cobalt. Oops getting hard edges. Not allowed. Sigh.

Painting the water and the figure. He disappeared. Oops. The water reflection is just burnt sienna and ultramarine.

And finished. My rocks could have more greys. Oh well. At least the hard edges are where they are suppose to be. And the rocks are weird shapes. Like the round boulders and the wedge shaped blue rock but that’s because I drew them in about three minutes.

He’s sending us the video so I can paint it again. We get access to it for a month. So now to make myself do it!!

Margaret xoxoxox who actually read a book today instead of painting. The Restoration of Celia Fairchild by Marie Bostwick. One of the characters is based on a friend of mine and the book is dedicated to him so of course I had to read it. A beach read book but fun.

On a roll

Some of my favorite British birds from Paul Dinnings Videos and Sounds for Cats: Garden Birds. They really are the best bird videos I have seen on YouTube. Some people use them for a good nights sleep.

Another new Favorite is Prowalking tours. I went to Rome and Montmartre today. Think I will try Venice next. Just the beginning of it is gobsmacking.

Stillman and birn alpha pentel brush pen uniball micron Caran d’ache neocolor ii watercolor pencils and a teabag to wet the Caran d’ache.

Oops meant to post

This yesterday.

Drawing Van Goghs The Room with Danny Gregory. Always a fun activity on YouTube. Low pressure. Everyone yaks away via chat while Danny yaks. Last about an hour. He’s always relaxing.

As to The Room. Drawn with Caran d’ache neocolor ii which are crayons that turn into watercolors. I wet them with my fingers aka finger painted. I was too lazy to get up and find a brush so I stuck my fingers in my nearby water glass and smeared the color around.

Did u know the actual painting has turned purple. Some reaction to the underpaintings color. Oops Vincent what happened?!

Day 162 Out My back door

Scribbling the birds eating and the lush greenery from all the rain.

No pencil in this sketch. Just using the Caran D’ache Neocolor ii crayons which are a lot of fun.

May hit this with water. The colors will really pop but it would loose all the scribbley lines which I like. What to do what to do. Stay tuned.

Caran d’ache Neocolor ii stillman and birn Alpha

Margaret off to Laguna Beach CA to paint with Vlad Yesilesev. You should come too. Get ready for paint to fly. Xoxoxo Have a wonderful Sunday.
