Day 625 – Pegasus Bridge

This sketch of the Pegasus Bridge  Museum was going well til for some reason unknown to me I decided to drop a museum visitor into the mix who was as tall as the statue on the left. Huh?! What was I thinking?!

The only way I could think of to save this sketch of an interesting building was to draw a red  Pegasus Bridge symbol and glue it over the woman. Not the best sketch but the best solution to the problem.

The top of the building is built like the glider that the Bristish Glider Infantry used to fly behind the Nazi lines in France to capture the Pegasus Bridge in Caen. This battle to control and hold the Bénouville Bridge at Caen France commenced the WW2 Normandy D Day Invasions.

So brave where the British Glider Infantry during the fighting that Bénouville Bridge was renamed Pegasus for the red Pegasus Patch worn by the elite British paratroopers.

Read more about this battle here.  The Brostosh dead were buried at nearby Ranville church which I will post tomorrow.

Day 621-Duval Street

I love this beautiful old episcopal church on Duval. St Pauls is supposedly haunted by the sea captain that donated the land to the church. He haunts the tower.

Here’s another view of St Pauls tower against the bright blue Caribbean sky.

More about Haunted Key West. Great ghost tour.

Day 614 – an angel

WIP aka playing or spring break fun. What can I say I watched too many YouTube videos yesterday. Hmm I think squared her head off a bit when I painted the halo but that’s easy to fix.

Check out Marshall Arisman. He also has some fascinating videos on. I wish mine looked a fraction as good as his do even though his work is very odd.

I painted the background with Titan buff first and then painted the halo and wings with Quin nickel Azo gold. With a paper towel I rubbed off some of the nickel Azo gold.

I painted the background a mix of  nickel Azo pyrrole red and ultramarine blue and sometimes white. And I rubbed it off around the halo and wing exposing the Titan buff undercoat.

Then I added black to the background straight from the tube and smeared it around wiping it almost off in spots.

I will be adding iridescent gold and silver to the wings and probably the halo and my shiva paint sticks too.

This is what she looked like before I painted the background.

Anyway adding some gold and perhaps some silver to the background AFTER I make her head round again.

Thanks for reading.

Day 613 Duck Duck Goose and

Drawn with my stick. I thought it needed shadows. Thinking it didn’t. What do you think? Drawn with platinum carbon black ink on canson mixed media paper.
Geese without the shadow. What do you think?

A dog that loves to chase the geese in the neighborhood. My lab Honey begging yesterday. Like the ink drops. They were a happy accident. One fell and I added the rest. She started a little off but improved. Definitely the way she sits on the floor begging.

Thanks for reading.

Margaret who’s early today! 👍🏻❤️❤️❤️

Day 612 – Running late.

WIP -Emily – 24 x 30″ acrylic she needs more work!! Monday!!

Almost forgot to post.   Been on a house cleaning purge this week after reading a book called  The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up!Who  knew books could be clutter especially if you never read them again. The author suggests unless a book makes you happy you should pass it on. So I have been and yes it’s making me happy.

So while piling up almost 100 books to Goodwill today I found a set that made my eyes bug out. Worth a tidy sum on Amazon resales.

Last time I did that I sold a book that I paid $5 for at the Borders remainder piles for $275- filled with lovely horse sketches and a Jack Russell or two drawn by the guy who started the gnome craze – the little elves in the peaky red hats.

The block in at first break. Eek look at that nose!! And the chin!!

This weeks nude. A new model. She did a lovely quiet pose. Eventually I got the face sorted.

So what’s wrong with the painting. Not a lot.

The background needs finishing especially the left.

Her face needs some lightening and some highlights. And that forehead is TOO round.

Right breast a little in how did Dave put it “a ski slope!” It’s not easy doing detail with a HUGE brush.

If I had to start over I would make her larger and explode off the canvas a bit but as is she’s a nice quiet painting.

You never know I just paint her over. Mondays are always  a fresh start. Isn’t that great!?

Thanks for reading.

Day 609 -The Party’s Over

This is the last sketch done during Wet Paint party. I drew Sallie doing check out as we waited to pick up painting. Thank goodness Sallie bought mine.

This sketch started the quotes.  I started to write “Even James has a cell phone” but I thought it would be more fun to write a JB quote. Did you know there’s a website with endless James Bond movie quotes?!

Hope I didn’t post this one but evidently the modern James Bond likes his cell phone!  I only drew a bakers dozen James Bond sketches si it gets confusing.

Thanks for reading!!

Day 608 How many More?

Hard to resist drawing James with one of his many ladies.  Turns out the girl in the foreground is actually newly wed to James Bond who you can see in the background.

I still haven’t painted this. It’s not very big 6×9″maybe. Lots of tiny details but who knows it might actually be fun for a big painting?

I have a few pages of these….the models changed their poses before au had a chance to finish them but I still think they are interesting especially the girl on the right. She managed to twist her hands in front of her body planting her hands on her hip bones and HOLDING the pose. Wow!

Thanks for reading.  I still have quite a few French sketches I have yet to post too. Hoping to get to them soon.

Day 607 – 22 Sketches

When you do that many you can post sketches for a week or more never repeating yourself. The girls costumes begged to be painted and the  many columns lining Sacred Heart. Great fun to paint wet on wet.

The second or third sketch I did that night.  I had not quite warmed up.  Gouache is great for covering the background fast. When you have 22 sketches to paint you better have something that gets done quickly besides the sketching.

One day when I grow up I want to paint urban sketches like this one by Al Beyer done in India a couple of years ago. Can you see the moped flying by? This is a big oil painting 3×4′ not a tiny sketch but definitely falls in the urban “sketching” genre. You can see more of his work here but sadly non of his urban sketching he does on his Maymester trips abroad – India – China – and this year Cambodia. Watch out Angkor Wat.

Thanks for reading!
