Day 953 way too busy.

Been downtown sketching. There will be prints of my local urban sketches at a downtown gallery soon but in the meantime I was in downtown hanging up signs for our group show this weekend.
You are invited! My friends Andrew Murphy and Kathe Dennis are joining me at 600 Building gallery for a group show this Friday, March 3, 6-8 pm.
The 600 building is located in the median of the 600 block of Broad Street between 6th & 7th Streets in downtown Augusta.
It’s also first Friday so the other galleries are open late. And there’s always some great local restaurant for a delicious dinner at Frog Hollow, Bees Knees, Fuse or the funky Nacho Mamas to name a few of the downtown eateries.

Don’t you want to come?

Thanks!

Glad to update this with YES ITS DONE! Signed sealed ya wanna buy it?

After over a month of painting on this large canvas Looking Down-Ponce City Market.  I can only hope!! It’s acrylic 3’x4′ BIG!!

Day 946 Enterprise Mill

In the parking lot on the backside of Enterprise Mill sitting in my car hoping people would walk by to add them to the sketch.

This is called the Graniteville Mill too and I actually misspelled Graniteville!! Left the N out which I tried to disguise with the left tree. Sad. I really liked the sign and it looked good til I left out the N!! OOPS!

And the people are a bit too large but hey it’s a sketch so I am ok with that. Fast and dirty can lead to mistakes on the fly.

This scene is to the right of the one above.

Colors used. Hmm one of the orange reds browned down a bit with piemonite. Cerulean and the rest. Ted Nuttalls transparent colors.

Lamy EF with Lexington Gray in an Alpha Stillman and Birn.

My Girls!

Excited. Dr Sketchys tonite. Hoping both dogs are on the mend from the barf episode for Honey and Zoe’s lumpectomy yesterday so I can go.

Day 940 – LateNight Entertainment Al Beyer!

Our beloved prof Al Beyer was the program at the Aiken Art Guild last night and he was his usual humorous self peppering his talk with quip after quip such as “If you get a bad painting it’s your failt but if you get a good one (at lifemodeling) it’s all the model!! And that is true well sometimes.

This huge seemingly abstract is the way Al works. It will be a photorealistic water landscape painting when he’s done or as he calls it the most boring painting ever since it will be almost all water with his. A bit of tree bank across the top.

We told him we liked it as it is. An abstract.

He blocks off the painting into multiple blocks the size of a standard piece of paper. Every nite with a printed paper from his tiled photograph he paints one section in oil with a small brush which takes him about 2-3 hours per square.

Here he is with his helper Vanna aka Ilaina – one of  our Saturday models.

Here’s a better picture of this huge painting. It’s made by layering multiple photos of Beijing in Photoshop. Interesting effect.

Hmm my sketchbook seems to be among the missing. I drew theses ladies yesterday while my excellent steak salad got cold at Aiken Brewing Company on Laurens Street in Aiken.

Hope I find it. It will be a great painting when I am done. Sigh.

Day 927  Inner Bean again

But I was drawing lunch not drawing the restaurant. First piece of cake from Inner Bean in months. I used to eat cake there a lot. Not since I have lost 30 lb.

Worst thing about drawing your food is that you can’t eat it til you draw it. I got

The delicious strawberry cake first. Before the salad. And I was hungry. I resisted. Did I say Inner Bean is famous for its cake?   They won Best Cake in Augusta recently. The cake is Just THE  best.

Margaret with a busy week. Getting ready for My solo show next week. Xoxox

Day 926 – Ponce City Market-Day 3

Working little is Looking Down

This is day three working on this huge acrylic. Well huge for a very short person. Lol. It’s 3’x4′.

Sorry the picture is not better.

Bytw the photo I am using to paint from  was taken from the second floor of Ponce City Market looking down on the restaurant tables below. The ceilings are very high so it’s like it was take from the third story.

The day I took photos the man on the right was everywhere. Always in the background cleaning. Always working silently in the background.

This is what it looked like yesterday when I worked on it. Still a lot to do. I don’t have the picture of the sketch because I started painting it as I was sketching it.

The sketch lines were becoming jumbled and confused so I started blocking in the colors so I could see what I was drawing. What was right and what was wrong.

Colors used. The undercoating is Nickel Azo gold. Other colors pyrrole red, Winsor purple, thalo blue, black, burnt umber, titanium white. Also

Using up lots of tail ends of tubes before they dry out like yellow ochre.

Ttyl gym time.

Day 912 a little conch republic

And a little more FauvismWhat we jokingly call a jacaranda when we head to key West. The trail on the Sunshine Parkway to Key West and we try to entertain ourselves. One way is the first jacaranda sightings which we usually spot south of Orlando.

The Tale of the Jacaranda

Now why do we call Norfolk Pines Jacarandas?  My first trip to Key West I sent a picture of a very tall thin tree to a friend who grew up in Florida. She told me it was a Jacaranda even though we thought it was a Norfolk Pine. I finally looked it up and yes it’s a Norfolk Pine. They grow fifty or more feet tall in southern Florida. Straight up like a cornstalk.

But that’s southern Florida for you. Every house plant we have grows to enormous size. Our house plants are their outside foundation plants.  Pothos and philodendrons have leaves bigger than dinner plates and grow stories tall just like the Jacaranda Pine tree.

Stillman and Birn mixed media Zeta Ted Nuttals transparent colors. My small Isabey mop. Well mostly.

Yesterday after I bough the sunflowers I remembered that Earthfare sold some gorgeous red radishes with lots of green leaves. So I made an extra trip 8 miles up the street and got a bunch. $2.99 ouch. Cheaper than flowers though.

Once again we were to use as many cooors as we could to draw these after drawing the first one in the colors the object is. I was lazy and left them on the plastic bag.

Number 1.  Fun but I like the other one better.

And all the colors I used.

Day 897 More Urban Sketching or the Best Coffee in Georgia

I drew this the other day when I met Nellie Brannan for coffee at the Dancing Goats in Decatur. It’s Decatur’s favorite coffee shop. Their coffee is sold in Augusta at Augusta’s favorite coffee shop the Inner Bean.

I drew the brave people sitting out on the sidewalk in front of the dancing Goats as they walked thru the scene.  There was alot of coming and going.

Colors used cerulean quin gold cad orange cad red hookers green ultramarine blue quin coral and marine blue.  Stillman and Birn zeta Lamy Safari Lexington Grey

Sketchbookskool homework. Draw a still life with thick and thin lines. I used a tombow instead of a fine and a thick sharpie.

I really didn’t like the line drawing so I got out a watercolor brush and some water and let the tombow bleed. Then I added some water to the shadows and picked up the grey to splatter it. Like it a lot better now.

Thanks for checking by.

Day 894 A Long Winters Nap

And a Happy New Year to all if you dear readers. Sherlock starts tonite in PBS. Hurrah. Ok so maybe it’s just my sense of humor but my JRT Zoe has slept this busy day away. I probably should have but instead decided to clean house, unpack,  paint, unpack, and knit.

I also started to put the kombucha in the fridge instead of the pantry when one of the bottles decided to explode in the pantry. Sigh. Imagine champagne exploding in the pantry and you have the mess I was dealing with. Dropping off the shelves. Puddles on the floor. I added mopping to the list.

Back to the sketch which is why you came by right?! She was curled up on the back of a Christmas quilt I left thrown on the living room sofa backside up.

Colors used quin burnt orange, quin coral,  yellow ochre, burnt sienna, cerulean, cad red and ultramarine blue.

Dinner time. Hungry so ttyl
