Day 241 – Mary Ann’s Cup

MaryAnnscup

One of the assignments for sketchbookskool is to paint a teacup.  I have my great great grandmother’s coffee cup.  I had already painted her husband’s coffee cup earlier and had meant to paint Mary Ann’s but not quite gotten around to it.   So it was a great opportunity to do it.

Mary Ann and her sister Sarah Purcell Robinson

I really don’t know alot about Mary Ann other than she raised my grandmother and when my great grandmother decided to ride a horse astride in a horse race she would NOT have it.  She told my great grandmother she would NOT be riding on a horse like a man.  She also had a great collection of family photos of her and her Purcell family. And thats about all I know about her. She died a year after her husband of many years.  Strange that I would have her coffee cup and not know more about her.

Back to that coffee cup.  I drew it with my Noodler Flex pen with De Artremis Brown Document ink. I meant to do the whole spread with that pen but OPPS picked up the other Noodler that had Lexington Grey ink in it.  I am glad at least it was not black. Of course I did not realize it till I was well along with the grey writing and drawing the map of Oklahoma.

I can’t say I really enjoyed painting this cup. I wanted to draw more birds and squirrels but since I signed up for SBS I wanted to see it thru.

I think the cup is slightly out of round but so would you be if you were a hundred years old!! LOL..

I drew it first with a yellow ochre watercolor pencil…probably should have used a grey one.  Colors used Cad yellow light, cerulean, yellow ochre, quinacridone sienna, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, quin rose and cobalt.

AP's Coffee Cup

AP’s Coffee Cup

This is her husband, A P Johnson’s cup.  If you see paper glued on a journal page you can be SURE that I messed up the lettering and fixed it with another piece of paper!!

BYTW I thought perhaps her cup was not old. It just doesn’t look as old as AP’s except the pattern on them is very similar-same feathery odd looking leaves and pink flowers.  I never would have noticed that had I not painted them both.

Thanks for looking!

Day 24o – The End of Downton Season 5

I meant to draw more of the players but somehow it did not record. So I drew Lady Violet Crawley Dowager Countess of Grantham. What a name?! I hope I got it right. Nobody is better than Maggie Smith in her part.

My favorite character Lady Violet always has some smart answer.

I drew her with my Noodler Creaper Ahab loaded with Carbon Black Ink. I love that pen. Makes such great lines because of its flex nib and so cheap.

I drew the face and hat. Added a lot of crosshatching shading with the Creaper. A bit at a time.  Hard to go back once these too much.

I originally had her name and the quote below Lady Violet who was in an oval.  Originally I intended to paint the “mat” area.

I ran out of room for the quote so I got the bright idea of making an oval mat out of old ledger paper. I use it because the pen does well on it. Some paper the pen feathers on. Not a good look.

How did I get that oval? I might add it was perfect on the first attempt. I cut a piece of paper the same size as the sketchbook page. The I clipped it over the page, held it up to a sunny window and drew the oval. I then carefully cut it out from the inside out. I really was amazed that it fit exactly.

She was colored with caran d’ache and  some Watercolor markers I got at Michaels. A lot of fun. No idea if they are lightfast but there are 24 of them. Cheaper than the nonlightfast Tombows.

Here’s the whole double page spread with more Lady Violet quotes. She’s so funny to me. All lettering down with the Noodler Creaper Ahab on Strathmore 500 Mixed Media paper.

Thanks for looking!!

Day 239 – Four Reclining nudes in Twenty Minutes

One of the guys gave me his chair dead center of the model yesterday so I could have a better view of the model but I only had twenty minutes left to draw. And no big paper – just my art journal. So these are what I did in 29 minutes.

Number 1 – a contour drawing  with my Noodler Ahab on Strathmore 500 Mixed Media paper starting with the shoulders. I start there to get the shoulder angle right comparing it with the models shoulders to see if my line is parallel to her shoulder line. The I drew across the top Of her hips and legs continuing across the bottom back to her shoulders. The crosshatching was added after the contour drawing as was her face. I hate her face so decided to turn the page and start again.

This is number two. I think she went better and her face looks better.

Number there is the big one in the bottom with the Pentel brush pen. I think her thigh is too big and her head a tad small.

So onward to number four. Only about five minutes left. That’s my favorite. The PBP makes great drapery fast!!

They were quick fun sketches and I think a bit Henry Moore or Picassoish.

Which one is your favorite?!

Thanks for looking!!

Day 231 – Life Modeling in Aiken

Went well today. Only 134 days left til I have blogged daily for a year. Starting to sound doable.

Materials used Neocolor II Caran d’Ache and #140 Fabriano Artistico

IMG_8431

Today was life drawing at USA Aiken and the lovely Elena was our model.

IMG_8428
She’s been thru quite a few stages. This is where she is now though thinking of lightening her right eye. I think it’s still a little dark.

IMG_8432-0

Here’s how she looked after the first twenty minute break. That lemon yellow caran d’ache had been calling my name and saying use me use me!!!

TIP I take pics while I am working on it so I can see how it looks from a distance. You can really see your mistakes when you do this. And they are handy for a WIP work in progress blog post!!👍

IMG_8429-0

My friend Ruth said she didn’t like the yellow and could I make her peachier. Ruth is usually right so I did. I also needed to lighten the shadows on her face which was making her look too old.

I lifted the shadows with a good stuff hogbristle oil paint brush and blotted off with a bounty towel. That#140 Fabriano Artistico is tough paper. Always amazes how you can wipe off the Fabriano.

IMG_8430-0
I also had to narrow her right shoulder and lift both of them up a bit on either side of her neck. I love that hogbristle brush. It lets you do the lifting of color a smidge at a time.

Thanks for looking.

Day 229 – A Few Bits and Bobs

Terribly cold here today and I cant stay home. Ten degrees with the wind chill this morning and it will be that bad tonite. Somebody send some warm air back.

Because I am busy today will post some more that I haven’t posted yet

.barnesandnoble

I drew this at the Starbucks at the local Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago.  I really need to go again.  You really begin to know alot about the people you sketch if you sit there and collect drawings like I did on this one.  The young girl was on her cell phone though I thought she looked a little suicidal with her hair in her face all dressed in black. I was relieved when I noticed she was on her cell phone.

The old guy was talking animatedly about taxes.  Groan…dont want to hear about taxes!!

hamptoninn

A very fast sketch that I drew while Jan checked out at the Hampton Inn in Valdosta.  I really like its chunkiness…almost an abstract. Always a favorite of mine it was NOT well received on Instagram but I still like it anyway!  This was sketched as I sat in the middle of a room of people eating breakfast busily walking by me checking out and getting coffee.  No one seemed to notice what I was up too…there are two more pages!!

Florida

This should have been in my Key West sketchbook. It started as a double page spread but I never finished the other page so it never got finished.  I dont know if you have ever driven from Atlanta to Key West but its a VERY long LONG trip!! I guess I will finish the other page when we go back this summer!!!

Starbucksatl

This well dressed older man was sketched at the Atlanta Starbucks in Edgewood Barnes and Noble. He had such long fingers.  I also have his hadn drawn somewhere else…Hands can give you fits and do require PRACTICE!!

Thanks for looking!!

Day 226 – a few more bits and pieces

IMG_8304

A group at Panera. I actually knew one of the women but she never noticed me sitting in the booth drawing her. Funny I think.

IMG_8309

A close up of the Panera group.

IMG_8294

My hand model. Hands are hard to draw so it’s great to have a hand model. Also known as my right hand.
Done with my Pentel brush pen.

Day 224 – Something Different

Saturday is life modeling day. Our model was the lovely Erica.

IMG_8216

I drew Erica with my Neocolor caran d’ache watercolor crayons. No pencil was used on this drawing. Just the crayons.

I tried to draw her with a limited pallete of peach, yellow ochre, burnt Sienna, burnt umber and a chocolate brown. I did add in white before I finished and a touch of a bright rose pink.

I used a fine misting spray bottle to release the colors. I also used my waterbrush for this as well as to blend some colors.

IMG_8213

I think the dark on the right side of her mouth needs to be wiped off. How do I do that?

I lift color with an old Grumbacher hog bristle brush or with a damp wadded or folded bounty paper towel. Always am amazed by what you can wipe off Fabriano paper.

Thanks for looking!!

Day 223 – More gulls

My friends will tell you that I rarely do just one of anything. I always do multiples. So far eight pages of those sea gulls. No idea how many pages of wild birds that visit my feeders on the back porch.

IMG_8205

I usually start by drawing the outline of the birds starting at the head and chest. Then the shape of the body and add details last.

I was getting tired of the cerulean backgrounds so as my kids at school would say I changed it up to a green background. I made the green with manganese blue and cad yellow light.

Otherwise the birds are done the same as yesterday’s. I just didn’t have time to color these yesterday.

IMG_8196

The background on this one is Quin Sienna a very orangey color.
This was my fav page til I realized that one of the birds might need some more body aka belly on him. I do love the look f the Quin Sienna with the greys. My favorite background.

IMG_8203

First I drew them with a grey Tombow marker as I watched them out the window. Sometimes I had to give them several turns at the feeder to get them almost right. I didn’t use the bird books or Google images at all on this page.

I should have used a darker Tombow because you am an hardly see this one after I colored the birds with the caran d’arches crayons. The crayons are a lot of fun.

The lettering was done with my Pentel brush pen. I do love that pen. I also did a lot of the birds legs with this one.

A lot of the smaller birds were done when they were sitting on the porch rail waiting their turn. The red house finches are very bossy and try to run off the other finches. I also wrote some of their behaviors down. The little wren would land on the wind chime and watch a bit then zoom in and out.

The chickens were on a netflixs show I had been watching so I added them to the drawing.
Thanks for looking.

Day 221 – A few ChiCkEnS!

IMG_8152

My friend Marilyn Tomeo told me that Browns Feed and Seed has chickens and a turkey. On my way home yesterday I stopped by and drew those chickens. It wasn’t long before they ran off. Perhaps they were shy or I scared them!? As long as I stayed in my car they were happily running around and eating. Once I got out I had to follow them around. They climbed under fences and behind some of the accumulation at Browns.

So rather than chase chickens – I already had three pages of chickens. I decided to draw the store. It was fascinating with everything from signage that would make the American Pickers sigh with happiness to an old horse harness, the remains of a ghost and my favorite – an alligator concrete bench. The bench is because there’s an alligator in the pond next to the store. I will have to go back and look for him to draw but not while it’s cold. He’s hiding.

The more I drew the more I saw just like Tommy Kane says. I do wish I had either painted the fluffy clouds in the sky and or the pines behind it but I love the way it turned out.

Colors used. Burnt Sienna, burnt umber, cerulean, Quin red, cad yellow light, ultramarine blue, manganese blue
Greys were made by mixing the blues and the Browns.

IMG_8153

These were adorable chickens. The brown one had on pantaloons. I am assuming they were both hens but I have no idea!! They both kept giving me profiles. Maybe that’s why chickens frequently appear that way? Colors used. Quin Sienna, burnt umber, cerulean, cad yellow light, ultramarine blue

Backgrounds are cerulean. Shadows cerulean and burnt Sienna.

IMG_8151

Yellow dog came out to wag its tail and beg a pet. Too bad I didn’t have a treat for her. Poor old thing only had one eye. Maybe she got in fight with the alligator In the nearby pond.
