Alice @alicesulsul Day 97. Three more to go. Trying to catch up. Eeekk. All about the curly hair and the drips. The photo The sketchFirst layers. Loving the drips. Clothes are the same colors plus holbein terre vert a Charles Reid favorite.Layer 2. Shes showing up. Coming into focus
9×12” superaquabee sketchbook which was driving me a little nuts. It waffles badly when it gets too many wet layers. Then it would run into the face. Eekk. What happens when u soak 90 lb paper. Oh well.
Thanks! Judith @jyportraitchallenge and Alice @alicesulsu
Getting there but hair a little boring. Time to add some andrews turquoise.
Found these fascinating British artists who draw and are using fabric. Great youtube videos. This one does portraits on fabric. Cant wait to watch it. As soon as I post i am.

Scott @onelifemodel
Thought he was done yesterday in my hurry to go swimming but NOPE.
Day 95 Scott @onelifemodel. I did a bit of titivating(tweaking) to Scott. A fine line when titivating becomes too much. Wasn’t pleased w the final painting. Think he’s final now.
What did I change? Not alot. The angle of the mouth. Darkened the left eye to knock it back. A bit of flesh on his forehead and pink on his cheek. Defined his nostrils a bit.Alot of cerulean and cobalt shadows. Cerulean wash for beard then added black whole wet. Burnt umber Ultramarine and ivory black for hair. Loosing edges of hair painting the cerulean adding yellow ochre and quin burnt orange for background. The sketchThe photo 9×12” superaquabee sketchbook.
Thanks! Judith @jyportraitchallenge and Scott @onelifemodel
Done. Oddly the face is the same painting in both pics. All I can say is go figure.
Day 91 Donella @darealsdonella really like painting animals and who could resist this kid?! An armload of adorable fuzziness. I want one, please!!!
Lighter background otherwise everything is the same.
Forgot process pics. Managed to use alot of quin burnt orange in the goat. Perfect for him plus burnt umber and cerulean for the fur. Doneallas hair barely used yellow ochre. My current fav skin quin burnt orange and quin pink. Cobalt and quin pink top. Cerulean and burnt quin orange for the background plus andrews turquoise.
The photo. How cute is he?!
9×12” superaquabee sketchbook.
Thanks! Judith @jyportraitchallenge and Donella @darealsdonella
The sketchLast night’s sunset out back. Better color in this one. IPhone is reliably unreliable for accurate color.
But first. Don’t forget pencils4tea at 1 pm EST. One hour of wild drawing fun. See u there. Well i hope my husbands birthday so off to the grocery store for a few last minute goodies.
The photo Have long meant to paint Frank but could never slow down long enough to do it. He wasnt in Judiths portrait rotation but just an if u want to paint here he is. I love painting craggy old men w beards. The sketchFirst layers. Have to stop and remember to take pics. My fav skin tone paint. Daniel Smith Quin burnt orange and quin rose. Ultramarine in the shadows. Beard cerulean, ultramarine and andrews turquoise with bits of ivory black. Forgot the pics. andrew turquoise in the ceiling. Burnt umber and ultramarine in the eyes w dabs of perlene maroon. Blacks are mixed from ultramarine and burnt umber or quin bunrt orange. Quin burnt orange and burnt umber paneling. When u think hes done but there are edges to soften and shadows to add. Then i added the big scary. Ultramarine in the shadows esp on his nose and the ceiling and paneling on the left. Then i declared him done.
I think Frank wanted to be painted. Relatively an easy straight forward paint. i do wish i had used more ultramarine in his shirt. Always looks good in a black shirt.
Drew this last night of my sweet husband w my caran dache neocolor ii. And this yesterday am. H appy Birthday Dickie.
Have a super day. Margaret off to the races xoxoxoxo

The sketch The photo The geese out back enjoying some breakie this am. Evidently watermelon is tasty. Enjoying the water on his own. Just for laughs. The unicorn float disappeared from our pool. A unicorn thief?? No our granddaughter who loves them took it home. This pic was sent by her dad with her unicorn collection floating in the float in her pool. Rofl. Who puts stuffed animals in the pool??!??🧐😳
Day 87! #jyportraitchallenge Andrea Eleana @ humana_lince was not wild abt the photo but rather like the painting alot. Thinking Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Drawingisfree_org today. 16 portraits in an hour. OH MY. not what someone who doesnt feel well should be doing but then I lade a video of them. U can see lore at my ig feed. @maggieinsc. Chloe our drawing mc did poses mostly lasting less than three minutes. Even the double was three minutes 40. Oh MY. They are usually closer to six. Quite the challenge today. And yes i would do it again!! Lol. Cant wait for next week. Sick woman here in more ways than one. Hahaha.
Day 86! #jyportraitchallenge @sylvester.lifedrawing!! Loved the picture. Couldnt wait to paint him. Did not turn out the way imagined. What happens when u paint when u don’t feel well. Oh well.
The photo The sketch – 9×12” superaquabee sketchbook.
Lots of burnt umber and ultramarine. It will go quite dark. A bit of cobalt blue. Cerulean blue background. Ivory black for hair and bird w a dab of quin burnt orange.
Thought it was done but too light. 🧐Too blue. 😵💫Better. Had to add to the back of his head and his neck.
Thanks! Judith @jyportraitchallenge and @sylvester.lifedrawing!!
I dreamed of a Charles Reid style painting with burnt umber and ultramarine mingling to a lovely dark brown but nope was not to be. beyond me even when i feel well oh well onward and more coughing!!
Get your pencils sharpened. Don’t forget tomorrow is @drawingisfree _org at noon EST. Click on the zoom link. Cant wait for the fast paced hour of drawing people . We usually draw at least 13 heads. Great practice!
Day 85! #jyportraitchallenge Jill@jilliam58!!Time To Jump back on with the portrait of back pack girl. An outdoorsy woman living her best life.I thought she was done til i realized her chin was a smidge too long. Made her looks like Nixon or Jay Leno. Oops.Adding the scary ultramarine shadow on the left. Always looks like a terrible screw up when you do it but add in skin tone, soften the edges and voila you have a great shadow .Daniel Smith quin burnt orange and m graham quin rose for skin. m graham Burnt umber and ultramarine for hair and blacks. Cheap joes Alizarin bricks. m graham Mineral violet straps. 9×12” superaquabee sketchbook. The sketchThe photo. Thanks! Yesterday’s @pencils4tea fast sketches. 13 in an hour. So much fun. Can’t wait til mondays @drawing_is_free.org session. Charcoal pencil and watercolor in my superaquabee.
Charcoal pencil and watercolor 4 min
As always the hour flew by @pencils4tea
We memorialized Lesleys freshly broken arm. Ouch
Thanks Kirsty & Jane, it was fun! Live from Engand i think?! Always fun and challenging.
That camera pose oh my! And in three minutes no less. 😵💫😂
Live every Th @1 pm EST on Zoom. Free event!! 2-5 minute poses set to music. Lasts abt an hour. Time just flies during the hour.
Loved Mollys pose but I might have to titivate it. Aka make small changed. Hate the smear of quin rose on her cheek. Four minutes for this. Seriously?! Great pose. Loved her expression.
Really like the Generals charcoal pencil drawing w a shot of watercolors over it.
Liz always turns out so well. Five minutes was too long. Had to squelch my urge go titivate this one. Those hands! 😵
Used only two brushes a 1 1/2” flat cheap joes golden taklon and a 3/8” dagger striper from masters touch.
Sweet pose and yes sometimes u get cauliflowers. Oh well right?
Some of my fav artists like Don Andrews and Skip Lawrence tend to use alot of flats and oh my gosh they are fast and do the job well. Maggies hair was done in 1 swoosh of the1 1/2” flat.
Jane. I think a formidable woman. Not that I have ever met her. Shes in England somewhere.
DS quin burnt orange and quin rose, Cheap joes andrews Turquoise, cj yellow ochre, cj burnt umber, cj cerulean, cj cobalt , cj alizarin, and cj hookers green, Lukas Cad Yellow, m graham cobalt and ultramarine watercolors, 5×8” superaquabee sketchbook
Hmm oh well they cant all be perfect right?! Her overalls could use a swoosh of black.
I do love the mix of DS quin burnt orange and with a dab of quin rose for the skin tones. Works on the very pale or people of color like Liz. Add alot of water and u get a light skin tone like on the right of Mikalas face.
Sarah. A quiet pose. Umm what was i thinking. The last time I used that aureolin yellow and manganese. They turned ugly quickly. Marnie hiding behind her lilly. She really could use some titivating. Lol. Out back this am. Fog grows and grows. Then poof its gone.
Maggie in SC xoxoxox Cant wait for Mondays session of drawing_is_free.org 1 hr of sketching excitement on zoom.
LIVE from Paris! Drawing is Free at Noon EST on Zoom!! NO Nudity. Just drawing heads. GREAT practice
Day 54- My fav painting so far.
Keeping it fresh i hope and not overworked. I used Mary Whytes fav flesh combo M Graham raw sienna and quin pink for the flesh tones. Works well for all skin tones just varying the amounts of raw sienna and water to lighten or darken the mix. Its the only combo she uses for skin tones. Sweet face w her fun two tone hair. Fun painting her curly hair again today. While i remembered to do the hair wet on wet it ran too much. Thicker paint next time.Lots of great lost edges in this painting
Day 55 #jyportraitchallenge. Definitely a TOUGH paint. All that shadow and the pic is black and white so what to do with the background?! Lots of dark blue since its the compliment of peach/orange and makes her skin sing. The blue also let me loose her left side in the shadows.
My fav part is where her left hip meets the background.Day 54 #jyportraitchallenge. Another crazy busy day so i just did our lovely model in profile. Hmm got the ear too far foreward otherwise fun painting her hair and the lovely lights on her chest. I used a big cheap chinese brush and a Cheap Joes Scroogys Loose Goose for her quin gold and quin burnt sienna tendrils. The Cheap Joes Scroogys Loose Goose is a very long very skinny saver brush that is almost impossible to control. You have to trust it it will make perfect curls.Day 52 #jyportraitchallenge. Love her eyes. Fun painting her curly hair. Forgot to soften the hairs edges by painting into the background wet on wet. Hopefully next time. Works so well w fluffy curly hair. Drawing went well. Done quickly.Day 51 #jyportraitchallenge. Miranda. So many details to paint. Need i say more!? Drawing went well. Done quickly. Painting wasnt bad either just too many things to paint. Note to self. Do not tape the corners. Duh!DAY 50!!! of the #jyportraitchallenge. Did not ever think that i would get this far. David @gotsix2 flew off my pencil and brush. Glad he’s done. Beard could use some more grizzle in it but hey done is good.
M Graham and a few Daniel Smith quins – gold burnt sienna and scarlet.
11×14” Stillman and Birn Alpha sketchbook OR Meeden cp 140. Or Fluid cp 140.
Painted w a Mary Whyte fav paint M Graham and her fav brush a cats paw, #10 Charles Reid kolinsky sable (both brushes and paint at Cityart in Columbia, SC @cityartsc ) and 1/2” Robert Simons synthetic flat, arches 140 cp 9×12”
