Day 942 Sacred Heart

I never get tired of trying to draw it and paint it. My fav building in Augusta. I think I got it this time.

It’s an old deconsecrated Catholic Church downtown on Greene Street. I used to take Spanish from the nuns in the school to the read of the church as a third and fourth grader. My mom thought it was how we needed to spend our Saturdays. Asks me if I speak Spanish. Nope!!

Colors used. Piemonite, cerulean, ultramarine blue, Quin burnt orange, burnt umber, Quin gold, vermilion, green appetite, sap green.

Drawn w my Lamy EF in a stillman and Birn Alpha. Paper will dry flat but it’s a little wavy now.

More to paint.

Day 941 A few more als and that urban sketch

Sketched at the Aiken Brewing Company on Laurens St downtown Aiken

Colors used Quin gold Quin red orange cerulean, burnt umber, ultramarine, hookers and a gel pen or two.

Draw with a Lamy Safari and Lexington Grey ink in a Stillman and Birn Zeta.

Als painting of a student circus 1990. Even then he was trying to paint like Vermeer.

Als friend from the gym who loved to tell stories. He was a rower in the 52 and 56 Olympics for Hungary.

Al after his heart attack. He used his computer camera to take this photo.

The models make Al look like a great painter so he says but we know he’s a great painter.

Ilaina gorgeous as ever. A Saturday painting. 3×4′

Als office. Always neat. Painted with acrylic. Much wilder than his oil paintings. LOVE This one. Think it got a certificate of merit at the State Fair.

Als an awesome painter and teacher the reason. I drove 60 miles three times a week to Aiken to become a better painter I HOPE!!

Day 937 Its Saturday

Sarah 24×30″ Acrylic alla prima.

Her last modeling session before she moves to Los Angelos this week. We will miss her. She had such a sweet pensive look today. Maybe she was thinking about her big move. LA is a long way from Augusta Ga.

The painting. Was done in an hour or so. I liked it when I left. Now I am not so sure but that’s life isn’t it?! Took a while and several restarts to decide how to paint her but after that it was easy. I turned the panel one way and then the other. Finally painted her vertically.

She was in such a nice position with her legs extend I wished I had a big square to paint her on but oh well only a rectangle.

Colors used titanium white pyrrole red and nickel azo gold for skin. Highlights are primary yellow mixed with the skin color. Shadows are Winsor purple added to the same mix.

I used some thalo blue and that’s all the colors.

Here she is at first break. Forty minutes.

Last session I drew this large ink drawing of Sarah on a piece of mat board. It’s Sarah’s goodby present. Took about 15 minutes.

Oops I forgot her hand and left leg. Oh well.

Drawn with my Pentel brush pen and I bled the ink with a wet Winsor Newton flat fake mongoose brush for shading.

It was a big crowd today. People were even sitting on the floor. Oh it’s good to be young. They were rewarded with Happy buttons for their floor positions.

Al Beyer’s beautiful very large oil 3×4′. A great expression.

Jeremy’s beautiful conte crayon sketch.

Kathe’s wispy sketch. Love the wispiness of it. Conte crayon.

Here it is before the background.

Tom Needham’s beautiful watercolor. Background is Daniel Smith Quin coral.

Marilyn Hartley’s lovely pencil charcoal and ink sketch. Wispy was in today. She really did a great face on this one. Looks just like Sarah.

Another of Kathe Dennis’ lovely sketches charcoal this time.

AC Daniels great oil though for some reason he later wiped out her leg.

Coachs charcoal. Always a great job. And interesting.

Rachel’s branching out. Pastel on arches.

Fred still in his Mondigliani mood.

Dawns sweet face of Sarah.

Last but not least our lovely Iliana’s painting. Great colors. Wonderful face.

And that’s it for today. There were More that got away without a photo.
Ttyl

Margaret ready for a longggg nap. Xoxoxo who sold TEN paintings last nite. Hurrah!!! And the show has a month to go!!!

Day 931 Panera on a Sunday

The Panera on Robert C Daniel Parkway  was jam packed last week. It was much multiracial than the Evans Panera is.

This is the first sketch I did there. Not perfect but hey it gets you out of the house.

This one was better. I just dropped people in as they wandered by. Lettering could be a little darker.

Ted Nuttalls transparent watercolor palette. Lamy Safari Stillman and Birn Zeta.

Time to go do some urban sketching.

Xoxoxo Margaret

Day 928 Getting Squirrely

The back porch squirrels and their antics are always fun to sketch. A ready model. Cheap.  Will work for bird seed anywhere anytime anyplace. And of course I like to imagine what they are thinking as they gobble. Really need to name  them Oreck and Dyson or Hoover. Miele?!

Drawn with a Lamy Safari in a Stillman and Birn Zeta mixed media.

Colors. Background Quinn gold squirrels cerulean Piemonte ultramarine. Splattered with Quin sienna or burnt orange.

Have a go at the squirrels. The back porch birds are fun to draw too. Use some gestures. It doesn’t have to look just like a particular squirrel it just had to look like a squirrel – the way they hold their food and hunch up over thier paws or spread their tails. Fun stuff.

Margaret off to look downtown and see what there is to sketch in this 72 degree day of sunshine. Xoxoxo

Day 918 The Feet that Marched

Right foot left foot.

Today at 2:30.  Have French class today so I left on time for once…maybe the first time ever. Its cropped a bit to small. BUT I and everyone else that I paint with like it alot.

Instructions from todays critique..DO NOT loose the sketchy lines as I paint AND to organize the chaos of the shadows…whatever that means…I guess it will be revealed!! I HOPE!

Finished this full sheet (20″x30″) watercolor yesterday. It languished in the corner for about two years almost done. Really pleased with the way it turned out.

No idea what the colors are its been so long. 👀🙄

I did lift some whites around the people and on a few trees with the Mr Clean Eraser and my erasing shield. Scrub scrub scrub and there’s white. I also used a dab of white gouache just to be sure.

Thanks for reading.

Margaret who hopes WordPress posts this because it didn’t yesterday. 🙄

Day 552 More Brevard!

Main and Broad in Brevard. I think it’s the town hall or the court house?! Watercolor, Noodler Konrad w D’artrementis Document Brown in strathmore Mixed Media 500 sketchbook.

I drew this sitting out near O P Taylors on Broad which has a good view of the court house.

The tree and building were still decorated for Christmas. I love that people no longer zip the decorations into storage the day after Christmas.

brevardcourthouse2

A great view of the mountains as Broad Street drops off toward Asheville.
My biggest dislike about the Strathmore Mixed Media 500 journal is that it’s very difficult to make lay down  flat giving a large shadow down the spine. Not very attractive in the middle of a painting!

I guess I need to flatten it on the scanner but so much easier to use the cellphone for a quick pic.

Colors used. Cerulean sky w a touch of cobalt. Red w yellow ochre for brick colors. Burnt umber and Inathrodone for shadows, roofs, truck and street. Hookers green w Inathrodone for the for tree.

Thanks for reading.

Margaret xxx who is off to the Columbia Art Museum for the Georgia  O’Keefe exhibit.

Day 450 – O.P.Taylor’s Toy Store

O.P.Taylors Toy Store – Watercolor, Noodler Konrad w D’artrementis Document Brown in strathmore Mixed Media 500 sketchbook.

In Brevard NC a charming small mountain town near Sapphire Valley. We all love to visit O.P.Taylors Toy Store http://www.optaylors.com in downtown Brevard on the corner of Main and Broad Street.

O.P.Taylors Toy Store is truly a fantastic store that kids dream about. Toys packed to the ceiling in this old two story store. Even the staircase ballisters are popping with stuffed animals. There are several other locations including one in Biltmore Village and a website. If you find one nearby check it out. It’s truly ToYLaND!!

I drew the store as I sat outside waiting for my kids to come out of it. It’s a dangerous place for a grandma to go with her sweet grandchildren. They didn’t need another thing after the largesse of Christmas so I sat outside to avoid temptation.

This is not the front of the store but the side that faces Broad.

Colors used. Everything in my whiskey  painters travel box. And a white gel pen on the Christmas lights.

Thanks for reading.
